hi! i just started following you + i absolutely love your blog.
i used to be a vegetarian for about two years, and then i came overseas and started eating meat (because everything is free-range here and they don't mistreat the animals like they do in the united states), and i was considering going vegan when i got back to the US. the only problem is that i'm going to be in college as a freshman and i'm not quite sure how to maintain being a vegan with the food choices they have there.
do you have any advice on how to be a vegan in college? i know the college i'm going to has a sort of "gourmet convenience store" that has salads/sandwhiches/etc, but i wouldn't want my meals to just be salad every day.
thanks!
our best answer: try your best. eating in college is like eating out every day for four years. you don’t have complete control, and it might freak you out. thankfully, most major colleges now are aware of veganism, and are pretty accommodating. if you aren’t sure if they are cooking their vegetable medley in butter or soy sauce, just ask. if you’re finding that a lot of the hot meals served are not vegan, go to the meals director (support from fellow students & faculty always help your argument, so make it known others feel the same way) and let them know that you don’t feel you’re getting your money’s worth.
i was only vegetarian all throughout college - it was super easy. when vegan, you just have to keep your eyes a little more open.
get salads, soups, & fresh fruit mostly. (that’s what we eat most of in the real world of adulthood now, anyway.) if you don’t want to go perfectly healthy, always look for these foods: cheeseless veggie pizzas, pasta (with a salad), wraps & sandwiches, burritos/tacos, indian food, and general asian food like stir fries. if you can’t get slices of cheeseless pizza, buy a whole pie and save the extras for leftovers.
it mostly depends on how good and diversified your cafeteria is. my university had made-to-order EVERYthing (like pizzas, stir fries, sandwiches, and even sushi if you went on the right day) so it would’ve been easy to do if i really knew what veganism was all about then.
if you guys have any more ideas for btwnwindows to help her in going vegan in college, let us know in the comments!
